With the ongoing demise of struggling bookstores and book publishers, especially gay and lesbian ones, it’s nice to know that queer literature is still being celebrated by authors and fans alike. From March 1 to 4, the 6th Annual Bold Strokes Books Palm Springs LGBTQ Book Festival will be taking over the desert with author readings and events all over town.
The festival began in 2006 as a lesbian book event at the Casitas Laquita, with author readings by the poolside. It has now expanded to events not only at the inn, but also to panels and readings at the Palm Springs Public Library, and a Saturday night Authors’ Dance at Mango’s, across the street from the gay bar Toucan’s in North Palm Springs.
“Oh my God, what a great group of people,” Casitas Laquita co-owner Joanna Funaro told Curve magazine about the book fair. “The fans are the best, warm and friendly. The authors, I cannot say enough about them. Who would have ever known what a success this event would become. My wish is coming true, as this event is growing bigger each year.”
Dozens of LGBT authors from around the world will be in town representing many genres of writing, including sci-fi, poetry, and erotica with GLBT themes and characters. The whole grass-roots four-day event happens in a casual, affirming atmosphere where everyone gets involved. Readers can easily meet and chat with their favorite authors between events. And best of all, the festival is totally free and open to the public.
