5 things to LOVE about Palm Springs

From shopping, to hiking, or relaxing on a patio

Palm Springs is a travelers paradise.  From world-class spas and hotels, to shopping, dining, and getting outdoors you can find a million ways to busy yourself... or do nothing at all and treat yourself to a relaxing stay by the pool. If you've never been to Palm Springs, here are five great reasons to come and get acquainted.

Enjoy Modernism; unique architecture & history

The architecture in Palm Springs is like nothing you’ve seen.  In fact, it has its own branch of architecture called Desert Modern.

From celebrity homes (Think Leo DiCaprio’s Palm Springs getaway or Bob Hope’s former palatial dome home on the hill, or Elvis Presley’s honeymoon hideaway) or gorgeous public buildings, and swank retro-mod hotels, Palm Springs is truly an architecture lover’s dream. Sign up for a guided tour, or grab a map (or the app version) and take a self-guided driving or cycling tour. Click to read our blog, Touring Spectacular Homes in Palm Springs for more info on both those options.

Bask in the Desert Environment
Whether you like hiking, walks on flat terrain, or spotting some of the beautiful desert flora or fauna, the area around Palm Springs is rich in beauty.  Take the tram to the top of the mountain and experience winter like conditions on top, compared to the scorching desert day on the valley floor.

There are also plenty of hikes through lush valleys or even across the sandy San Andreas fault.

Play Golf in a gorgeous setting
It goes without saying that Palm Springs is a golfer’s paradise.  With several public courses in just the city of Palm Springs alone, you can choose the type of course, or area of town you’d like to play in. The courses often feature a mix of lush greenery and desert landscaping, meaning you’ll not only have an enjoyable round, you’ll have some eye candy too.

Go Shopping; art, outlets, furniture & boutiques
Start by strolling Palm Springs’ main drag, Palm Canyon Drive.  You can check out the Downtown which is loaded with shops, restaurants and stores, or head a bit further north and see the Uptown Design District. There you’ll find a vast collection of mid-century modern retailers, fashion boutiques, consignment dealers, art galleries and antiques shops.

You can also find your way to art galleries and studios in the Backstreet Art District, or enjoy the special weekly market that shuts down Palm Canyon Drive every Thursday evening, Villagefest.

Plus, the big outlet mall, Desert Hills Premium Outlets is just a 20 minute drive from all the action, and well worth spending half a day. See all the shopping recommendations here.

Sipping Cool drinks in the desert heat
After hiking, walking, shopping and touring, you’ll need a break.  There are so many chic places to get off your feet and enjoy some down time. (Check out our list here)  Hotels like the Saguaro, Ace, or the Riviera all feature beautiful lobby bars or outdoor areas, plus there's a wealth of small hotels to enjoy too. Learn about some of them here.

Plus there’s numerous classic restaurants like Kaiser, La Cazuela and others where you can enjoy great food and service with a long history in the city. Then there’s places like Shanghai Red’s where you can huddle in a small friendly spot, gulp oyster shooters, and listen to live music.

No matter what your vacation preference, Palm Springs has something for everyone. Check out more of my personal favourites here.
