The Top Three Gay-Popular Gyms in Palm Springs

Posted By: Matt Link Monday, July 30, 2012

While on vacation in Palm Springs, you’ll probably be busy with nightly bar crawls and daily poolside tanning - but eventually guilt catches up and you need to get yourself to the gym. After all, you’ll want to look decent in your birthday suit while staying at one of the area’s 30-plus gay clothing-optional resorts!

Luckily, with Palm Springs’ large LGBT populace, a number of gay-popular gyms abound. Here are three local favorites:

WorkOUT Gym

Palm Springs’ first gay-owned and exclusively gay men’s gym (with women welcome) opened early this year on North Palm Canyon Drive near Toucan’s, a popular gay bar in the north part of town. WorkOUT Gym is a class act through and through, with 4,000 square feet of space and brand new state-of-the-art free weights and machine weights. The personal, boutique atmosphere is casual and helpful – you’ll feel right at home here even if you aren’t a regular gym bunny (although the buff eye candy isn’t bad here either!). Four gay personal trainers are on staff, as well as a handsome, professional instructor of Mixed Martial Arts (kickboxing-wrestling-grappling) who gives one-on-one hour lessons for $35 in a special conditioning room with mat space, training bag, and pads. The gym’s cardiovascular equipment comes with individual TVs, and a comfy lounge offers free wifi. There private showers and private lockers, and an adjoining dry sauna is in the final stages of completion. Best of all for visitors, WorkOUT Gym has no contracts or sales staff, and day passes are kept at a low $12. Three-day passes are $25, and week passes are $35.

World Gym

The largest gym in the desert is also by far one of the gayest. World Gym is a great place to meet locals since everyone seems to know each other here, and this franchise is gay-owned. But it’s not just a coffee klatch kind of place – serious bodybuilders work out here as well as average Joes and Janes. Over 30,000 square feet of space in one big room makes for plenty of elbow room, and even when during the busy times, there’s little waiting to get on a machine. The locker room, showers, sauna, and steamroom all inhabit a spacious and almost spa-like section in the back, where clothing is optional. A regular schedule of 20-minute ab classes, yoga, Zumba, spinning, Pilates are all offered at no extra cost. The facility even hosts a smoothie bar and athletic clothing shop. World Gym is located near Sunrise Way and Vista Chino – teasingly right next to a donut shop! A one-day pass is $15, while a week-long pass costs $49.95.

Gold’s Gym

Although not as predominantly gay as WorkOUT or World’s, gay-friendly Gold’s Gym has a strong following of LGBT men and women. It’s one of only a handful of Coachella Valley gyms that stay open 24 hours – a plus for far-away visitors experiencing jet lag! The multi-story facility also offers one of the most extensive class schedules around, with everything from group cycling to advanced step to power yoga to full-body boot camp. Gold’s even has on-site childcare and trained nutritional counselors. (Exhibitionists, be warned: Gold’s Gym has a strict clothing code. Shirts must cover chest and back, bathing suits are required in pools, spas, steams, and saunas – and sorry, no thongs allowed!) Gold’s is near Ramon Road and El Cielo Road, on Airport Center Drive just south of the Palm Springs Airport. Day passes are $15 and are good for 24 hours, while week passes are $45.

One error on Workout gym; it is not exclusively gay. While most of the clientele may be gay, I am not, and I have never been made to feel intimidated (except by some of the people in better shape than I) nor have I felt unwelcome.

The Workout gym is the gayest and the best gym I have ever been to.
